Fairfax County school board approves Skyview High boundary map

Fairfax County, Va. — July 21, 2026

Fairfax County's school board unanimously approved new Skyview High School attendance boundaries July 16, affecting 2,544 students starting in 2027-2028.

The Fairfax County School Board voted unanimously to adopt an attendance boundary map for the new Skyview High School, according to FFXnow. The plan draws students from Westfield, Chantilly and South Lakes high schools to relieve overcrowding on the county's western side.

The new lines are expected to affect 2,544 students. Of those, 1,159 will be assigned next year to Skyview's campus at 2949 Education Drive, in the Floris area south of Herndon.

Phased rollout, opt-out window

The boundary takes effect for the 2027-2028 school year. Incoming ninth graders will have the option to opt out and stay on their former high school pathway that first year. By 2028-2029, when the opt-out ends, FCPS projects 1,606 students will attend Skyview.

The map reassigns 1,062 students from Westfield, 384 from South Lakes and 333 from Chantilly. A related set of boundary adjustments will move 186 Chantilly students and 77 Centreville students into Westfield, and shift lines for Carson, Franklin and Liberty middle schools.

Oakton High School's boundaries are unchanged. Oakton students were already permitted to opt into Skyview for the 2026-2027 school year under a decision made in November 2025.

Westfield's enrollment loss draws pushback

Sully District representative Seema Dixit said the boundary process was difficult given the school's compressed opening timeline, but called the new school "much needed" given residential growth on the county's western side.

Parents told the board in testimony that losing more than 1,000 students would cost Westfield funding, teachers and programs. Superintendent Michelle Reid said the reassignment could let Westfield stop using 13 trailers, though she said the district would keep them on-site for now in case nearby housing developments finish ahead of schedule. Hunter Mill District member Melanie Meren said Westfield's reduced enrollment of about 2,000 students would still support a full range of programs.

At-large member Ilryong Moon moved to keep the Stonebrook at Westfields neighborhood in Chantilly's boundary, after residents there raised objections similar to those that led the board to leave nearby Walney Village's boundary unchanged in an earlier draft. The motion failed on a 7-4 vote.

Reid acknowledged residents' concerns as fair. "It's not a pure science, and it's not going to be perfect in our recommendations," she said.

The board also directed Reid to report back in October on a specialized programming pathway for Westfield in business, information technology and skilled trades, and on lessons learned from the boundary process overall.
