Fairfax County traffic deaths more than double to 26 so far in 2026

Traffic deaths in Fairfax County have climbed to 26 so far in 2026, up from 11 at the same point in 2025, and county police are stepping up enforcement in response, NBC4 Washington reported on July 20, 2026.

Pedestrians account for 11 of the 2026 deaths, alongside 15 vehicle deaths. A year earlier the count stood at eight vehicle deaths and three pedestrian deaths.

Officers told the station they generally allow drivers about 15 mph over the limit before making a stop, and many of those now being pulled over are traveling 20 to 30 mph over. Master Police Officer Earl Culbertson pointed to cellphone distraction and heavier traffic, and said motorcycle crashes have also been rising. "Everybody's in a hurry in Northern Virginia," he said.

The Fairfax County Police Department plans another wave of its Road Shark campaign, an enforcement effort aimed at aggressive driving, in August 2026.
